Clean Air Force

Since 1996, Georgia’s Clean Air Force, the state’s Enhanced Vehicle Emission Test and Maintenance (I/M) Program, has kept mass amounts of pollutants out of our air. Nearly 4.3 million polluting vehicles have been identified and repaired due to emission tests. As part of Georgia’s Clean Air Force program, the State of Georgia requires that certain vehicles must have an emissions test on an annual basis.

 

To determine whether your vehicle requires an emissions test, please see the guidelines below:

• For 2018 registration, if your vehicle is a 1994 to 2015 model year gasoline-powered car or light-duty truck (8,500 pounds gross vehicle weight rating or less) registered in Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding or Rockdale County
• The three most recent model year vehicles (2016 to 2018) are exempt from emissions tests in Georgia.
• If your vehicle is a 1994 or older model year, it is exempt from Georgia emission tests.
• Motorcycles, recreational vehicles (RVs), and motorhomes do not require emissions tests in Georgia.
• Diesel vehicles do not require Georgia emission testing for registration.
• Heavy-Duty vehicles weighing more than 8,500 pounds gross vehicle weight are exempt from an emissions test

 

Your vehicle must be emission tested every year prior to its registration date (the vehicle owner’s birthday). We recommend having your vehicle’s emission test performed four to six weeks prior to the registration renewal date.

 

THE GEORGIA EMISSION TESTING PROCEDURE INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

 

All 1996 and newer vehicles will receive the following three-part inspection:

• An OBD test to check your vehicle’s emission control performance history
• A fuel cap inspection to check for adequate seal
• A visual inspection of the catalytic converter to check for tampering or removal

All 1995 and older model-year vehicles will receive the following three-part inspection:

• A TSI test or an Accelerated Simulation Mode (ASM2) test – A dual-mode test including a 25/25 test = 25 percent load at 25 MPH and a 50/15 test = 50 percent load at 15 MPH
• A fuel cap inspection to check for adequate seal
• A visual inspection of the catalytic converter to check for tampering or removal

BEFORE YOU TEST

In order to give yourself enough time to do any necessary repairs and retests, Georgia’s Clean Air Force (GCAF) advises testing your car four to six weeks before the registration renewal date (the vehicle owner’s birthday).

AFTER YOU TEST

For help with repair and retesting after an unsuccessful emissions test, start by reading the Commonly Asked Questions and Answers. You can find solutions to the most typical queries from drivers like you.

If you return to the original inspection station within 30 days of your initial inspection and your emissions test fails, you will be given one free retest. Your original inspection’s date and time are included in the thirty (30) day period.

No vehicle will be subject to another inspection, whether paid or unpaid until the emissions repair form has been submitted and the vehicle has been fixed.
